KCMF’s 38th Season Explores 250 Years of Musical Imagination

March 5, 2026

The Kingston Chamber Music Festival’s 38th Season arrives with a wide-ranging artistic vision: a two-week exploration titled Life, Liberty, & Music. Framed by America’s upcoming Semiquincentennial, the 2026 Festival examines how composers and performers—across centuries, continents, and traditions, shape the evolving story of chamber music. Rather than presenting history in a straight line, this season invites listeners to experience how past and present continually speak to one another, revealing unexpected connections and creative intersections.

The programming reflects this idea from the very first concert, which moves from Boccherini and Mozart to Jessie Montgomery and Dvořák, offering a vivid picture of how chamber music has grown alongside the nation itself. The following afternoon, The British Are Coming turns attention to the deep roots between British and American musical worlds, spotlighting composers whose influence spans generations. Mid-festival, Mozart and Britten marks the 50th anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s death, pairing his works with the clarity and expressive balance of Mozart, two voices separated by time but linked by artistic lineage. Fans of solo cello repertoire will encounter a different kind of storytelling in Conversation with Bach, a powerful recital that places Bach alongside George Crumb and Witold Lutosławski. Additional programs, Between Worlds, Nightingale’s Encore, and Youth and Memory—continue the season’s movement across eras and stylistic borders, from contemporary American soundscapes to Brahms’s introspective late-Romantic writing.

Ahead of the summer season, audiences will have an early opportunity to experience the Festival’s spirit of collaboration at the KCMF Spring Concert on March 28. Cellist Megan Koch, known for her international performance and teaching work, joins Artistic Director Natalie Zhu and emerging young artist Alejandro Quintero Cashore in a program featuring Nadia Boulanger, Gian Carlo Menotti, and Johannes Brahms. This recital highlights the Festival’s longstanding commitment to musical mentorship and the meaningful exchange that occurs when established artists and rising musicians share the stage.
